The Value Of Uncomplicated Enjoyment

Those of you who have been following my blog for a while probably know that I have a tendency to be analytical and critical, sometimes overly much so. Uncomplicated enjoyment is a rarity in my life: I am too full of doubts and thoughts and worry to really take things as they come. It’s an exhausting way to live.

Fortunately, there are a few exceptions to the rule. Sometimes, when I have already fried my brain with complications and what-ifs, I can sit back and just do something for fun. Concerts are an example of this ability I have to let go. An other example is my long-time fandom of Supernatural.

For those of you who don’t know Supernatural, let me tell you: it’s a very straightforward show. Two gorgeous boys travel up and down America in a very impressive muscle-car, fighting to kill monsters and save the world. Meanwhile, they occasionally take a night off to spend some quality time with a busty blonde, or maybe to get really, really drunk. That’s it, that’s the show.

Fictional Fans

I once wrote a blogpost about fictional fandoms. Well, it stands to reason that fictional fandoms have fictional fans, right? So, this blog post is dedicated to just such fictional individuals. Perhaps they are the ones I identify with most of all. Perhaps the creators of my favorite stories conceived of them to criticize me or, to put it more bluntly, to encourage me to Get A Life. I don’t care. I love being a fangirl and I love my fellow fictional fangirls.

16068905Cather Avery – Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

Fangirl is centered around Cather Avery, a young girl who goes to university. She is introverted and struggles withe developing a social life, but on the internet she has no problem making friends. On the internet, Cath writes Carry On, Simon, the most popular Simon Snow-fanfic ever. The Simon Snow fandom is fictional, but it it obviously based on the Harry Potter fandom, and it pleases me a lot to see a respectful portrayal of fangirls and fanfiction writers in this book.

Penny Lane – Kate Hudson in Almost Famous

Contrary to popular belief, Penny Lane and her friends, Polexia Aphrodesia and Sapphire, are not fangirls.

Penny Lane: We are not groupies. Groupies sleep with rock stars because they want to be near someone famous. We are here because of the music, we inspire the music. We are Band Aids.

Music & TV

Music and the moving picture can sometimes come together to create something more than the sum of its parts; the song becomes more meaningful than it was before, as does whatever video material you’re watching. This is why soundtracks are so important. In this post, I have listed a number of scenes from TV shows that had exceptionally good soundtracks. From the moment I first watched these scenes, I could never hear the songs without thinking of the shows they went with in my head.

Most of these paragraphs will have at least some spoilers of the specific episode.

The song: This Is Hell by Elvis Costello (Song starts at 1:50 in the video below)
The Show: Gilmore Girls, season two episode five: Nick & Norah/ Sid & Nancy
Why it’s such a great combo

This is the episode in which Jess, originally from a much larger town, moves to Stars Hollow. Of course, he is less than pleased about this development. After showing off his displeasure in a James Dean-like display of rebellion, Jess heads out on a walk through the town. That is when This Is Hell starts to play in the background. The combination of Elvis Costello’s clear, familiar voice and the optimistic tune with Jess’ teenage hatred is just really funny to me somehow.
